| Water
Treatment Plant Uses Moxa's EDS-726 to Upgrade Monitoring
and Control System |
| Application:
Utility Automation
Moxa Product(s): EDS-726
Location:
Korea
The
Aha Sa water plant in Korea recently upgraded its monitoring
and control SCADA system using Moxa旧 EDS-726, a modular
Ethernet switch with 26 fiber ports, to support a fiber-based
Ethernet network infrastructure with a dual Turbo Ring,
redundant fiber backbone.
The Aha Sa plant is a major water treatment facility that
has supported the local area's population and industrial
growth for the last twenty years. It treats nearly all of
the water used in the district using workstations interfaced
with proprietary PLC control equipment. These workstations
control pumps, valves, and other pieces of equipment that
move the water through the various treatment processes.
The Aha Sa plant administrators were looking to upgrade
their network infrastructure utilizing state-of-the-art
Ethernet technology that was readily available, cost effective
to integrate, and able to help collect data from numerous
locations throughout the plant. An additional benefit of
using Ethernet was the ability to seamlessly support future
upgrades and expansion.
The
Aha Sa plant chose the EDS-726, a 26-port managed gigabit
Ethernet switch, because it provided multiple, easily-configured,
modularized ports that support multimode fiber, critical
for the long distances necessary to cover the entire plant
site. Furthermore, the switch offered excellent reliability
via its self-healing properties and fast network recovery
time (under 300 ms) after broken LAN connections. The EDS-726
was able to handle the needs of all PLC data collection,
central control, and administrative support, effectively
reducing cabling with a more efficient ring topology. Using
the double media ring combined with redundant node configurations
for all critical processes, possible system downtime was
significantly reduced and disaster recovery capability was
strengthened. The EDS-726 allowed the Aha Sa plant to move
away from their proprietary protocols, reduce their component
and maintenance costs, and add the gigabit bandwidth necessary
for additional monitoring and communications options such
as video and voice. The fiber backbone was also more resistant
to electromagnetic interference and transient voltages caused
by the occasionally harsh weather conditions.
With the upgrade complete, Aha Sa plant operators are now
able to easily check the status of all processes from anywhere
on the network. The ability to monitor storage tanks, levels
and flow rates in wells and reservoirs, and quickly open
or close valves during changes in demand, allows the plant
to adjust flow to city water lines more efficiently and
maintain a more stable system. It is easier to determine
the cause and location of any malfunction, and automatic
notifications warn operators and system controllers of alarm
events. The system has simplified decision-making by automating
many processes, such as refilling multiple storage sites
that were previously difficult to monitor and control. The
new system also allows the plant to store the results of
sampling more easily, improves scheduling and maintenance
activities, and helps obtain data to generate the diagnostic
reports that are essential to any water treatment facility.

Moxa
offers the following advantages:
1.
The EDS-726 provides support for long distance, multimode
fiber.
2.
The dual Turbo Ring feature makes configuration and management
easier for double media and network node redundancy.
3. The EDS-726 provides more ports to connect office devices
in central control.
- Simplified
networking
- Reduced
cabling costs
4. The
EDS-726's modular design allows for flexible configuration
and expansion.

control of windmills reduces management costs and increases
efficiency
Modern
wind turbines take advantage of wind currents caused by
the uneven heating of the Earth's surface. With the use
of advanced technologies, wind power can be harnessed for
many different purposes and is already one of the most popular
sources of energy today. Many countries have committed to
reducing the costs of wind power generation and making wind
turbines more economically viable.

| Take
Your Network to Gigabit with EDS-518A, MOXA's New Standalone
Industrial Ethernet Switch |
| MOXA
Networking is launching a new gigabit Ethernet switch
that has all the features needed for industrial Ethernet
applications. The EDS-518A is a new-generation Ethernet
switch that meets the European Union's RoHS
standards and will ready to ship by the middle of
June.
The standalone, 18-port managed Ethernet switch provides
two combo gigabit ports with built-in RJ45 or SFP
ports for gigabit optic communication. The gigabit
Ethernet, redundant Turbo Ring, and sub-300 ms recovery
time increase the reliability and speed of your network
backbone. The EDS-518A also supports intelligent network
management functions, including QoS, IGMP snooping/GMRP,
VLAN, port trunking, SNMP V1/V2c/V3, IEEE 802.1X,
and HTTPS/SSL.
The EDS-518A comes equipped with gigabit Turbo Ring
capability that gives system maintenance professionals
a convenient means of setting up a versatile, yet
stable gigabit Ethernet network. In addition, Quality
of Service (QoS) provides traffic prioritization capability
to ensure that important data is delivered consistently
and predictably, and the EDS-518A supports IEEE802.1D-1998
DMRP and IGMP snooping to reduce the amount of traffic
on the LAN. VLAN technology is supported and can be
used to segment your network without being restricted
by physical connections. IEEE802.3ad (LACP) provides
flexible network connections and a redundant path
for critical devices; SNMP V1/V2c/V3 provides different
levels of management; and RMON (Remote Network Monitoring)
allows various network agents and console systems
to exchange network monitoring data. In addition,
IEEE802.1X and HTTPS/SSL are available to enhance
network security.
Detailed information about the EDS-518A is available
on the MOXA Group corporate website at http://www.moxa.com/Event/Net/2006/EDS-518A/index.htm.

| MOXA's
NPort 5000 Series and NPort IA Series are DNV Certified |
| MOXA
Technologies has received Type Approval (TA) from
the certification society, Det Norske Veritas (DNV)
, for the NPort
5230, 5232, 5232I, 5410,
5430,
and 5430I,
as well as the NPort
IA series of device servers. DNV Certification
is widely recognized as an indication of the quality
of company's procedures and environmental responsibility.
As one of the world's leading classification societies,
DNV provides internationally recognized rules and
verification protocols for the maritime industry.
During the certification process, DNV verifies that
design, construction, and the operation of ships and
offshore units all meet a set of established requirements.
In May 2006, DNV issued the Type Approval (TA), certifying
that MOXA's NPort 5000 and NPort IA series device
servers are fully compliant with DNV's strict guidelines.
The DNV Type Approval Certificate not only means that
the certified equipment has passed stringent environmental
and functional tests, but also recognizes that the
equipment is suitable for use in maritime, oil, and
gas applications. For MOXA, certification of its industrial
serial-to-Ethernet products by one of the world's
leading classification societies is another example
of our commitment to customer service and quality
products. DNV certification is highly coveted for
devices used in maritime applications, and MOXA is
proud to be one of the manufacturers that provide
DNV-certified serial device servers.
